Behaviour
At Grange we believe that positive reinforcement and encouragement are needed in this area at all times. The staff seek to lead by example in relationships, work and expectations.
Our expectations and aspirations for the behaviour of the children at Grange Junior School are embodied in the positive statements set out in Our School Aims and the Golden Rules. Our behaviour should be with reference to these.
The school is committed to following the philosophy of Transactional Analysis in order to improve behaviour and raise self-esteem through developing emotional literacy, personal growth and change. The core principles of TA state:
• Everyone can think;
• Anyone can change.
This is supported by Circle Time, Golden Time and other agreed procedures, rules and more specific codes of conduct and expectations.
Circle Time promotes better relationships and more positive behaviour.
Golden Rules promote moral values. They are reinforced during Circle Time.
Keeping the Golden Rules is rewarded with Golden Time.
Each class has a timetabled Golden Time for 20 minutes each week.
Golden Rules are displayed in each classroom and around the school. These rules apply throughout the day. Keeping the rules is rewarded by access to the full 20 minutes of Golden Time.
Incentives for positive behaviour also include being rewarded with a sticker identifying the particular success and/or a Golden Certificate.
Inappropriate behaviour is unacceptable and the member of staff present will deal with most instances at the time. The behaviour that has caused the problem will be discussed and an explanation given of which Golden Rule has been broken. The child will be asked to consider an alternative choice and how that may change his/her behaviour in the future.
There are structured discipline procedures that we all follow when behaviour is unacceptable and consistency of approach from staff and parents is essential in this. Loss of Golden Time is used as the main sanction.
A more detailed explanation of Behaviour Management is given in a separate leaflet.

Cycles of development (ref. Jean Illsley Clarke)
Throughout our lives we all go through different stages of development which are not necessarily connected to our chronological age and we re-visit these stages at different times. If a pupil is starting a new school or an adult starting a new job, he/she will experience the ‘being’ stage of development. At Grange Junior School we believe that a pupil’s behaviour gives a clear indication of his/her stage of development. This information is used to give positive messages to the pupil to help and support him/her in completing the stage and moving on. Our Cycles of Development Information explains the tasks to be completed at each stage and the positive
messages (affirmations) and behaviours for teachers and carers to demonstrate to the child.
